Awareness Outreach
An awareness outreach program on the theme “Food, Nutrition and Hygiene” was organized by Yenepoya Research Centre (YRC) on World Food Day (16th Oct 2023) at Balasamrakshana Kendra Kuthar padav as a part of Scientific Social Responsibility. Professor Martin Welch, a renowned microbiologist from the University of Cambridge attended the event as a Chief Guest. He interacted with children and briefed them regarding the importance of hygiene and the benefits of a balanced diet. Dr. Rekha PD and Dr. Bipasha Bose created awareness about probiotics and other aspects of food and nutrition. Children were also allowed to express their views on the theme. Stationary items and gifts were procured through a fundraising program and distributed to all the children living at BSK. The director, faculty, NSS Program Officer and NSS volunteers of YRC actively participated in the event.
Participation in Science Exhibition
YRC participated in the seven day Mega Science Mela conducted as part of International Cultural Jamboree at Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodabidri from 21st to 27th December 2022. Thirteen faculties and 23 research scholars from different divisions of YRC were participated in the event. The research facilities of YRC were showcased in the form of posters, demo, models, and documentary during the event. More than 5000 participants from different parts of Karnataka and India visited YRC exhibition stall. The participants included school students, faculties from various colleges, engineering students, medical students, and general public. The feedback from the participants, research scholars, and the visitors were recorded.
School Lab Establishment in a Remote Village
YRC actively engaged in the establishment of a science laboratory at Malja-ul Islam English Medium School, Tippu Nagar, Pachambala, Kerala under Chancellor’s adoption scheme. Director and the faculty met school principal and teachers, assessed the laboratory and laid a roadmap for lab improvisation. Short-listed lab requirements such as reagents, chemicals, charts, slides etc were procured and handed over to the school on 27th October 2022. All basic items were supplied swiftly for smooth running of chemistry, physics and biology experiments.
Contribution to Swachh Bharath and Swasth Bharath
NSS volunteers of YRC participated in the beach cleaning program organized by the Coastal Security Police Station, Mangalore on 4th January 2023. Members gathered at the cleaning destination on time and actively participated in the cleaning drive of Ullal beach. Awareness was generated in the local public through the combined efforts of the youth Redcross, NSS and coastal security police, Mangalore.
NSS Unit of YRC organized a Plastic Garbage Mapping and Cleaning Drive at Panambur and Tannerubavi coastal areas Mangaluru on Saturday 24-09-2022 (9.00-4.00) as a part of NSS Day celebration. Volunteers including faculty and JRFs of YRC were involved in the drive. The volunteers interacted with locals and participated actively in the cleaning drive despite the extremely hot and humid weather. Plastic-contaminated areas were mapped using a mini drone (<250 g). Simultaneously, the volunteers separated larger plastic debris from the contaminated sites for further management.
A cleaning program was carried out by YRC on 12 September 2022 at Bakrabail Village (Pathoor, Kerala) under the ambit of Swacchatha Pakhwada, Swachh Bharat Mission, and Government of India. Eighteen volunteers including two faculties from the centre enthusiastically participated in the event. In addition, few local people were participated in the event. The cleaning went on for four hours despite the intermittent rain. Volunteers and locals took the pledge of maintaining their surroundings clean and tidy for a sustainable future. Participants shared the photographs of activities with messages in their social media profiles by tagging authorities for wide publicity. Team had a wonderful interaction regarding conducting such activities in nearby areas.
School Science Projects
YRC was actively engaged with local schools such as Sudana Residential School, Vivekannada English Medium School Puttur, SrAlva's Central School, Puthige, Moodibidre and Sri Rama Highschool, Kalladka for Scientific discussion and sample analysis related to Science Project.
Trainings & Talks
Dr. Shamprasad Varija Raghu delivered an Invited talk for public through All India Radio – Mangalore on the topic title “Drosophila - A Versatile Animal Model in Biological Research" on 26th November, 2023. He also conducted a State-level training for school/college students, Agastya International Foundation, Bangalore, and delivered a Talk on "Drosophila-An experimental model" on 25th February 2024.
