Research
Cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths, irrespective of age and gender. Tumors may have different genetic/epigenetic causes and the expression of markers and proteins can vary in patients. Administration of general cancer medicines to patients with same type of cancer, have proved inefficient for some and also caused problems of drug resistance. In-vitro studies fail to capture the in-vivo environment, and often prove an unsuitable approach for personalized drug screening. Animal models which are essential part of cancer research also prove ineffective to mimic the original tumour conditions. These gaps are filled by ex-vivo studies, where new opportunities have opened for the development of Organotypic slice cultures, and bioengineered matrices for better understanding of tumor-stroma relationship. Hence, with growth and improvements in the cancer research, this can prove to be a potential pre-clinical model for a more personalized approach.
